Mono-Material Lotion Pump & Bottle for Hemp Worx Body Wash and Lotion

Australian hemp skincare brand Hemp Worx wanted more sustainable packaging for two hero products – a 500 ml hand & body wash and a 300 ml body lotion.

By pairing UKPACK’s mono-material PP lotion pump (UKAP03) with matching PP bottles, we created a fully PP pack that’s easy to recycle, brand-consistent, and robust enough for everyday shower and bathroom use.

Project Overview

Hemp Worx was refreshing the look and footprint of its Rose Geranium & Patchouli body care range.

The team wanted packaging that could tell a clear sustainability story without sacrificing user experience.

In practice, that meant moving away from mixed-material components toward a mono-material design that recyclers can more easily process – while still delivering a smooth, reliable pump action for both wash and lotion.

They were specifically looking for:

  • a mono-material lotion pump with no metal spring and minimal material mixing
  • bottles and closures in PP, so the whole pack can be treated as one material stream
  • compatibility with 500 ml body wash and 300 ml body lotion formats
  • a shape and size that feels natural in the hand, at the sink, and in the shower
  • components that align with their natural, hemp-focused brand aesthetic

Hemp Worx approached UKPACK to help them build a full PP packaging solution that could work across both SKUs and support their long-term sustainability goals.

About Hemp Worx & the Products

Hemp Worx is an Australian brand built around hemp seed oil, gentle surfactants, and essential oils.

The products are positioned as naturally derived, free from SLS, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, with a strong emphasis on local manufacturing and vegan claims.

The two products in this project are:

Both formulas:

  • contain hemp seed oil, which can be sensitive to oxygen and packaging compatibility
  • are used frequently and often shared by multiple family members
  • live in wet, steamy bathroom environments where pack durability and pump reliability are critical

Because of this, the packaging needed to deliver:

  • real recyclability, not just green color or messaging
  • chemical compatibility with hemp seed oil and daily water exposure
  • a comfortable, one-handed pump experience that works as well in the shower as it does by the sink
  • a consistent look across different sizes and product types

Packaging Challenges

Challenge 1 – A True Mono-Material Pack for Better Recycling

Many “recyclable” pumps still contain metal springs or mixed plastics, which complicate the recycling process and reduce the chance that the pack will be handled as a single material stream.

Hemp Worx wanted:

  • a mono-material pump solution where all key components are PP
  • PP bottles to match, so consumers and recyclers see a clearly all-PP pack
  • a structure that can be recycled in practice, not just on paper

The challenge was to deliver this without compromising pump feel or leak resistance.

Challenge 2 – Performance with Hemp Seed Oil Formulas

Hemp seed oil and essential oils can interact with certain plastics and seals over time.

The pack needed to:

  • stay leak-tight in transport, retail, and bathroom use
  • maintain a smooth, controlled dose for medium-viscosity wash and lotion
  • resist swelling, stress-cracking, or premature wear in a warm, wet environment

A more sustainable pump still had to perform as well as a conventional mixed-material pump.

Challenge 3 – One Visual Language for Two Sizes

With one 500 ml and one 300 ml SKU, the brand wanted a clear family look on shelf:

  • the same overall silhouette and green color language
  • pumps that look and feel identical in use
  • proportions that make sense for a taller body wash and a shorter lotion format

The system had to scale across both sizes without needing separate, unrelated components.

UKPACK’s Sustainable Packaging Solution

1. Mono-Material PP Lotion Pump (UKAP03)

UKPACK recommended its UKAP03 mono-material lotion pump, designed so that all key components – actuator, closure, engine, and dip tube – are made from PP.

Key features:

  • No metal spring or foreign materials in the pump engine, supporting single-material recycling.
  • A smooth, reliable lotion pump action suitable for both wash and lotion textures.
  • A lockable actuator to help prevent leaks during transport and storage.
  • Multiple neck finishes and dip-tube lengths so one pump family can fit both the 500 ml and 300 ml bottles.

By choosing UKAP03, Hemp Worx gained a truly mono-material dispensing solution without having to design a pump from scratch.

2. Matching PP Bottle Family for 500 ml & 300 ml

To complete the mono-material story, UKPACK supplied PP bottles for both SKUs:

  • a 500 ml PP bottle for the hand & body wash
  • a 300 ml PP bottle for the body lotion

Both bottles:

  • are produced in PP for material alignment with the UKAP03 pump
  • are designed with comfortable, rounded shoulders and a stable base for bathroom use
  • offer surfaces suitable for the brand’s existing decoration and labeling approach

With bottle and pump both in PP, the entire packaging set – bottle, pump, and closure – can be treated as one material family by recyclers.

3. Color, Branding, and User Experience

Beyond material choices, the pack had to feel right for Hemp Worx’s audience.

UKPACK worked with the brand to:

  • achieve a natural deep green that reflects the hemp and botanical positioning
  • keep the overall silhouette clean and minimal, allowing the logo and claims to stand out
  • ensure bottle height, diameter, and pump feel are comfortable for repeated daily use

The result is a pack that looks straightforward and honest – matching the brand’s “naturally good” promise – while quietly embedding a more sustainable structure underneath.

Project Results

For Hemp Worx, the final solution delivered both sustainability and practicality:

  • All-PP, mono-material construction: Pump and bottle are PP, reducing material complexity and making it easier for consumers and recyclers to treat the pack as a single stream.
  • Consistent performance for wash and lotion: The UKAP03 pump provides controlled, repeatable doses for both formulas, while the lock feature helps prevent leaks in transit and everyday use.
  • Unified brand look across sizes: A shared bottle silhouette and pump design give the 500 ml wash and 300 ml lotion a cohesive presence on shelf and in the bathroom.
  • Clear sustainability story: Hemp Worx can confidently communicate a move to sustainable, mono-material cosmetic packaging, backed by real changes in component design rather than just color or labeling.

Why It Matters for Sustainable Beauty Brands

This project shows how personal care brands can move toward more recyclable, mono-material packaging without giving up usability or aesthetics.

Key takeaways:

  • Start with a mono-material pump platform like UKAP03 to remove hidden metal and mixed plastics from the system.
  • Match the pump with bottles in the same polymer, so the whole pack genuinely qualifies as one material type.
  • Design for everyday use – wet environments, frequent pumping, and family sharing – so the sustainable option still feels like the best option in the bathroom.

For brands looking to upgrade to sustainable cosmetic packaging or explore mono-material designs across a product line, working with an experienced partner like UKPACK makes it easier to balance recyclability, performance, and cost from the very first brief.
